About This Free Basalt Material

Deep Black Textured Basalt combines a nearly black stone appearance with dense granular detail and scattered lighter flecks. The preview shows an uneven surface that breaks up the broad highlight, giving the dark material more character than a uniform black finish.

Try it on a display plinth, a dark architectural accent or a substantial stone prop. A small area of this material can provide contrast against pale walls or lighter objects. For larger surfaces, inspect the grain from the final camera so the texture supports the composition without becoming distracting.

The sphere illustrates the material’s appearance. This download is a PBR material resource, rather than a scene or a modeled stone object. The name describes its visual character; choose its scale and finish against the references for your project.

Included Resolution and Preset

The free ZIP contains 2K textures supplied with the PBR Metallic-Roughness preset. Use this version to test the surface on your own geometry and evaluate its response in a small material study before applying it across an environment.

For an initial inspection of compatible texture files, open the PBR Material Previewer and compare how the dark grain responds as you change the viewing angle.

Import the supplied images into your material workflow, inspect their intended roles and configure the destination shader. This free download is identified by its Metallic-Roughness preset; the Unity and Unreal texture presets described on the complete bundle page are part of that separate premium offering.

Keep Dark Stone Readable

Place the material on a flat panel and a beveled block under the same light. The panel helps you judge grain scale, while the block exposes the transition from a bright reflection to the darker side. Keep the lighting fixed when changing the mapping scale, and inspect whether the pale flecks remain proportionate to the object.

If the material looks almost featureless in a scene, first inspect the lighting and viewing angle. A dark surface may need a useful reflected shape to show its form. Avoid changing several texture or shader controls at once: the stone material validation checklist provides a controlled sequence for separating mapping, channel interpretation and normal-detail issues.

Compare Light, Warm and Dark Stone

Use the free Smooth Silver Gray Granite as a lighter alternative under identical lighting. For a warmer, more visibly contrasting grain, compare the free Warm Pink and Black Granite. These are separate materials, so judge their pattern size deliberately instead of assuming the same coordinate settings produce the same apparent grain.

The granite and marble selection guide explains how to assign dominant and supporting roles to stone surfaces. Start with one dark accent and review the whole composition before adding more high-contrast materials.
